Graduated compression stockings are a clinical intervention with real evidence. Pneumatic recovery boots are a comfort and perceived-soreness product. Conflating them is the main error in this category.
Graduated compression stockings apply the highest pressure at the ankle, decreasing up the leg. That gradient assists venous return against gravity, and the category has genuine clinical standing: compression is a mainstay of chronic venous insufficiency and venous leg ulcer management, is used in lymphoedema, and is used for travel-related venous thromboembolism risk in some circumstances.
Intermittent pneumatic compression devices — recovery boots — inflate chambers sequentially to squeeze the limb. In hospital settings, pneumatic compression is used for venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in immobile patients, which is a well-established clinical application. The consumer recovery version is a different use case with a different evidence base: studies generally report reduced perceived muscle soreness and pleasant subjective effects, with limited evidence for accelerated physiological recovery or improved subsequent performance.
8–15 mmHg: light support, general comfort, mild swelling from prolonged sitting or standing.

Fit is the specification that determines whether stockings work at all. Compression garments are sized by limb circumference measurements taken at defined points, ideally in the morning before swelling accumulates, not by shoe size or general clothing size. A stocking that is too tight at the calf creates a tourniquet effect that is worse than no stocking.
This is a category where contraindications genuinely matter, because compression can cause harm in specific circumstances rather than simply failing to help.
Significant peripheral arterial disease is the clearest example: compressing a limb with already compromised arterial supply can worsen ischaemia, which is why arterial assessment precedes medical-grade compression in clinical practice. Decompensated heart failure, active skin infection such as cellulitis, suspected or confirmed deep vein thrombosis, severe peripheral neuropathy and open wounds all require clinical guidance before compression is applied.

For most people the cheaper interventions do more: adequate sleep, adequate protein, and simply elevating the legs. Recovery boots are a comfort purchase at a device price, and framing them that way avoids disappointment.
