A $30 foam roller and a $600 percussion gun are chasing the same modest effect: less perceived soreness for a day or two. Neither changes how fast muscle actually repairs, and knowing that changes which one is worth buying.
Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) — the ache that peaks 24 to 72 hours after unfamiliar or eccentric-heavy exercise — is the outcome most recovery-tool research actually measures, along with short-term range of motion and, less often, blood markers of muscle damage like creatine kinase. It is worth being precise about what that is and is not: DOMS is uncomfortable and can limit training quality for a day or two, but it is not the same thing as the muscle protein synthesis and remodeling process that produces long-term strength and size gains, and reducing the former has not been shown to accelerate or improve the latter.
Foam rolling has the largest evidence base of the tools on this page. A widely cited 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis (Wiewelhove and colleagues, Frontiers in Physiology) pooled multiple trials and found foam rolling produced small-to-moderate reductions in perceived muscle soreness and modest short-term improvements in range of motion and jump/sprint performance measures, with effects generally larger when used as part of a warm-up than as a post-exercise recovery tool alone. The effect sizes are modest, and several individual trials show no benefit at all, but the direction of the pooled evidence is consistently positive for perceived soreness at a cost of $20–40.
Handheld percussion devices are newer to the literature than foam rolling, and the trial base is correspondingly smaller: a handful of studies report short-term range-of-motion gains and reduced soreness comparable to foam rolling, plus a convenience edge for areas (upper back, glutes) that are awkward to roll solo. No published trial shows a percussion gun outperforming a $25 roller by a margin justifying a 10–20× price difference; higher-end devices sell convenience and quieter motors, not a proven larger effect.
Graduated compression sleeves and full-leg garments worn after exercise have a moderate-sized trial literature (including Marqués-Jiménez and colleagues, 2016) showing small-to-moderate reductions in soreness and swelling, with less consistent effects on performance in a subsequent session. The required effort is lower than active rolling — wear it, nothing to do — which may be its practical advantage.

No — this is a meaningful difference from cold water immersion, which has controlled-trial evidence of blunting strength and hypertrophy gains when used routinely right after resistance training, likely by suppressing the inflammatory signaling that drives adaptation (see our cold plunge guide). Foam rolling, massage guns and compression garments do not appear to interfere with the same pathway and can reasonably be used immediately post-workout without the same trade-off.
Adding vibration to a foam roller has a small additional trial base suggesting a possible modest edge for range of motion, though evidence is thin and mixed. Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) recovery mats, marketed at $500–2,000, lack comparable human trial support for exercise recovery specifically; the existing PEMF literature sits mostly in other clinical contexts (bone healing, certain pain conditions). A cheap foam roller plus a compression garment covers the evidence-supported ground for a fraction of the cost.
For percussion guns, a genuinely adjustable speed/amplitude range matters more than peak power specs, since most users tolerate only the lower-to-mid range on sore tissue.
Compression garments should state graduated pressure in mmHg (typically 15-20 or 20-30 for exercise recovery use); an unrated “compression fit” garment is not the same studied intervention.
Foam rollers range from soft to very firm (often with texture/knobs). Firmer is not simply better — a very firm textured roller is harder to tolerate and more likely to go unused, which is the actual failure mode for this category.
For massage guns, quoted battery life is usually optimistic and noise levels vary widely; check independent decibel measurements rather than the marketing spec if quiet operation matters.
