The evidence that a particular chair prevents back pain is weaker than the price tags imply. The evidence that prolonged uninterrupted sitting is a problem is stronger. Buy adjustability, then change position often.
Ergonomic chairs are sold on an implied claim: that the right chair prevents or resolves back pain. The research is considerably more equivocal than that. Reviews of workplace ergonomic interventions have generally found that chair changes alone produce inconsistent effects on back pain, and that multi-component interventions — adjustable equipment plus training in how to use it plus movement breaks — do better than equipment alone.
This is not an argument for sitting on a kitchen stool. A chair that cannot be adjusted to your body forces sustained awkward positions, and sustained awkward positions are genuinely associated with discomfort. What it argues against is the idea that spending more buys proportionally more spinal protection.
There is no single correct sitting posture to be held all day. The better-supported principle is that the next posture is the best posture — changing position frequently reduces the sustained loading that produces discomfort.
That means the most valuable feature of a chair is not a particular lumbar curve, but the range of positions it comfortably supports, and how easily you can move between them without stopping to adjust knobs.
Seat height should let your feet rest flat with thighs roughly parallel to the floor. If the desk is too high to allow that, raise the chair and add a footrest rather than compromising shoulder position.
Seat depth is the most under-considered adjustment and the one that causes the most trouble for shorter and taller users. There should be roughly two to three fingers of clearance between the seat edge and the back of the knee. Too deep and you either lose back support or compress behind the knee.
Lumbar support should be adjustable in both height and depth, because the lumbar curve sits at different heights on different bodies. Fixed lumbar support in the wrong place is worse than none.
Armrests should support the forearms with shoulders relaxed and elbows near 90 degrees. Height, width and often depth adjustment matter; armrests that force shoulder elevation or that block you from getting close to the desk cause more problems than they solve.
Recline and tilt tension matter because reclining slightly reduces spinal disc pressure compared with upright sitting. A chair that lets you recline comfortably and adjusts its resistance to your body weight supports more postures than one locked upright.

Most people never adjust the chair they bought, which wastes the only feature that has good evidence behind it. Set it up deliberately: seat height so feet are flat and thighs roughly level; seat depth for two to three fingers behind the knee; lumbar support into the small of your back; armrests so shoulders stay relaxed; monitor top at roughly eye level and about an arm's length away; keyboard and mouse close enough that elbows stay near your sides.
Then build in movement. Standing, walking or simply changing seated position regularly through the day has more consistent evidence than any static setup. A sit-stand desk helps, and so does the considerably cheaper habit of standing for phone calls and walking during meetings that do not need a screen.

The goal is alternating between well-set-up sitting and standing, which needs both a chair that fits and a way to stand.
