Fine particulate air pollution is one of the best-established environmental risk factors for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. It is also the one longevity variable most people have never measured in their own home.
The epidemiology on fine particulate matter is unusually strong for an environmental exposure. Large prospective cohorts followed over decades — the Harvard Six Cities study and the American Cancer Society CPS-II cohort among the most cited — have consistently found associations between long-term PM2.5 exposure and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, with the relationship persisting after adjustment for smoking, income and the usual confounders. The Global Burden of Disease work attributes millions of deaths annually to ambient and household air pollution.
Two features distinguish this from most of what gets discussed under longevity. The effect is observed at exposure levels common in ordinary cities, not only in extreme pollution. And the biological mechanism is coherent: particles small enough to reach the alveoli drive systemic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress, which are the same pathways implicated in atherosclerosis.
The evidence linking long-term PM2.5 exposure to cardiovascular mortality is stronger and more consistent than the evidence behind essentially every supplement marketed for longevity.

What has not been established: that running a home purifier produces a measurable mortality benefit. That trial has not been done and probably will not be. The exposure evidence is strong; the intervention evidence is inferential.
Indoor PM2.5 comes from outdoors through infiltration and from indoor sources, and the indoor sources are frequently larger than people expect. Cooking — particularly frying, searing and anything involving high heat — produces large short-term spikes. Candles, incense, wood burners and open fires produce very large ones. Vacuuming without a sealed HEPA system resuspends settled particles.
The bedroom is the room that matters most, for a simple reason: you spend seven to nine consecutive hours there breathing the same air, which is more continuous exposure than any other room in the house. If you buy one purifier, it goes in the bedroom, and this is not a close call.
Clean air delivery rate measures the volume of filtered air a unit delivers per unit time, tested independently, usually reported separately for smoke, dust and pollen. It is the number that combines filter efficiency with actual airflow, and it is what determines whether a purifier can keep up with a room.
Manufacturer “covers up to X square metres” claims are frequently derived at a low number of air changes per hour, which is adequate for a lightly polluted room and inadequate for anything else. The convention among people who take this seriously is to size for four to five air changes per hour.

The arithmetic is simple: room volume in cubic metres, multiplied by target air changes, gives the cubic metres per hour of clean air you need. Compare that with the CADR figure, converting units if necessary. Most people who are disappointed by a purifier bought one sized to the manufacturer's claim rather than to this calculation.
True HEPA is a mechanical filter with a defined standard: at least 99.97% removal at 0.3 µm, the most-penetrating particle size. Terms like “HEPA-type,” “HEPA-like” and “99% HEPA” are marketing constructions with no standard behind them, and they should be treated as an admission.
Activated carbon addresses gases and odours, which HEPA does not touch at all. The quantity matters — a thin carbon-impregnated mesh does very little, while several hundred grams of granular carbon does real work on volatile organic compounds. If gas-phase pollution or cooking odours matter to you, look at the carbon weight rather than its presence.
Avoid ozone generators outright: ozone is a respiratory irritant and a lung-damaging pollutant, and using one to clean air is trading particles for a gas that is worse for you. Be cautious with ionisers and some PCO or plasma technologies, several of which produce ozone as a by-product; unless a unit is certified low-ozone, a plain mechanical filter is the safer choice.
A purifier on its lowest setting typically delivers a small fraction of its rated CADR, and a purifier that is switched off because it is too loud delivers none. This is the practical failure mode: people buy an undersized unit, run it on high, find it intrusive, turn it down, and receive a fraction of the cleaning they paid for.
Buying a larger unit than you need and running it on a low, quiet setting delivers more clean air at less noise than a small unit running flat out. In a bedroom this is the whole design decision.
An inexpensive laser particle counter tells you what your actual indoor PM2.5 is, which room is worst, and what your cooking does to it. Most people are surprised twice: by how high the readings go during frying, and by how quickly a correctly sized purifier brings them down. Without measurement you are buying on faith, and with it you can size the unit properly and verify it works.
HEPA filters are consumables, typically replaced every 6 to 12 months, and carbon rather more often if it is doing real work. Over five years, filters often exceed the purchase price of the unit. Check replacement filter availability and cost before buying, and be wary of chipped filters that refuse third-party replacements — that design decision tells you the business model.
Use the extractor hood every time you cook, on high, and make sure it vents outside rather than recirculating — many do not, and a recirculating hood does almost nothing for particles. Stop burning candles and incense indoors. Keep windows closed during high-pollution periods and open them when outdoor air is clean. These cost nothing and address sources rather than filtering their output, which is the better order of operations.
