Traditional vs Infrared Sauna: The Mortality Data Was Collected in One of Them

The most-cited sauna longevity data comes from Finnish men sitting in 80–100 °C dry heat several times a week. Infrared cabins run at half that temperature. Whether the benefit survives the change is the question the marketing skips.

Where the Longevity Evidence Comes From

The data most sauna marketing leans on is the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study, a prospective cohort of middle-aged Finnish men followed for around two decades. Laukkanen and colleagues reported in 2015 that men using a sauna four to seven times a week had substantially lower rates of sudden cardiac death, fatal cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality than men using it once a week, with a dose-response across frequency and session length. Later analyses from the same cohort reported associations with lower dementia and hypertension incidence.

Three things about that evidence matter for the comparison. It is observational: frequent sauna users in Finland may differ from infrequent ones in ways that adjustment cannot fully remove. It was collected in traditional Finnish saunas at 80–100 °C. And the physiological mechanism proposed — a sustained rise in heart rate and cardiac output comparable to moderate exercise, with a drop in blood pressure afterwards — depends on the heat load, which is far larger in a traditional sauna than in an infrared cabin.

What can and cannot be claimed

Frequent traditional sauna use is associated with lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in a Finnish cohort. That is a robust association, not a proven cause.

Small controlled studies show traditional sauna acutely improves arterial stiffness, blood pressure and endothelial function, consistent with the mechanism.

Infrared saunas have separate, smaller studies showing reductions in blood pressure and improvements in heart failure symptoms (the Japanese Waon therapy trials), plus small trials in pain and recovery.

No study has followed infrared users for mortality outcomes. The Finnish data cannot be transferred to a 50 °C cabin by assumption.

What the Two Actually Do to the Body

A traditional sauna heats the air to a point where the body cannot lose heat by convection or radiation and must rely on sweating; core temperature rises by roughly 1 °C or more over a 15–20 minute session, heart rate climbs to 100–150 beats per minute, and skin blood flow increases severalfold. It is a genuine cardiovascular load, which is why the exercise comparison is made and why people with unstable heart disease are told to be careful.

An infrared cabin uses panels that emit far-infrared radiation, warming the skin and the tissue immediately beneath it directly while the air stays at 45–60 °C. Sweating still occurs and core temperature rises, but more slowly and usually by less; heart rate rises less. The session is more comfortable, tolerable for longer, and easier for people who find 90 °C oppressive. It is also a smaller physiological stimulus, and the honest description is that it delivers a gentler version of the same heat stress rather than a different, better kind.

Claims that infrared “penetrates deeper” and “detoxifies” are marketing. Far-infrared penetrates a few millimetres into skin, and sweat is water, electrolytes and trace amounts of everything else; the liver and kidneys detoxify, sweat glands cool.

The Practical Question That Usually Decides It

The Finnish benefit was seen at four or more sessions a week. Whichever sauna is more likely to be used that often is the one delivering more heat stress over a year, and for many households the infrared cabin wins that contest by being comfortable, fast to warm and installable in a spare room without an electrician. A traditional sauna used twice a month is not a longevity intervention; an infrared cabin used five times a week may be a smaller stimulus per session but delivers far more in total.

The counter-argument is that if the evidence base is what you are buying, buy the thing the evidence was gathered in. Both positions are defensible. What is not defensible is paying a premium for infrared on the strength of claims that were established in a traditional sauna.

Who Should Be Careful

Unstable angina, a recent myocardial infarction, severe aortic stenosis and uncontrolled hypertension are the standard cautions for traditional sauna; the heat load is real. Pregnancy, alcohol before or during, and dehydration are cautions for both. Anyone on medication affecting blood pressure or heart rate should ask before starting either. The infrared cabin's lower load makes it the gentler entry for people with those concerns, which is also its legitimate clinical use in the heart failure trials.

Infrared Blankets and Portable Tents

A far-infrared sauna blanket at $150–500 produces sweating and a modest core temperature rise lying down, with the head outside. It is not a sauna in any physiological sense that the research has examined, and it is not a cabin; the heat load is lower again. As a heat and relaxation tool it is pleasant. As a longevity intervention it is unstudied and should be bought as a comfort item, not a health one.

Cooling Between Rounds

Finnish practice alternates sauna with cooling — a cold shower, a lake, or simply the outdoors — and repeats two or three times. The cardiovascular response to the alternation is part of the traditional protocol and part of what the cohort was doing. A single warm session in an infrared cabin followed by a warm shower is a different exposure, which is one more reason the data does not transfer cleanly.

The Cheapest Version

A gym or public sauna at $40–80 a month provides traditional sauna at the studied temperature with no installation, for the cost of the electricity a home unit would use. For someone testing whether they will actually sit in a hot room four times a week, it is the rational first step, and it settles the buying decision for the price of a season of visits.

04 — Electrical Requirements Disclosed

A 6–9 kW traditional heater needs a dedicated circuit and a qualified installer. A cabin that claims to plug into any socket should draw under 2 kW.

The evidence is dose-specific and most saunas run cooler at the bench than the control panel claims. Does infrared sauna have the same longevity benefits as traditional sauna?

Unknown. The mortality associations come from a Finnish cohort using traditional saunas at 80–100 °C, several times a week. Infrared cabins run at roughly half that temperature and produce a smaller cardiovascular load; they have their own smaller trials in blood pressure, heart failure and pain, but no mortality follow-up. It is reasonable to expect some shared benefit through heat stress; it is not reasonable to assume equivalence.

Is infrared sauna safer?

It is gentler, which is why it was used in the Japanese heart failure trials. Lower temperature and a smaller rise in heart rate make it more tolerable for people who find traditional heat oppressive and a more cautious starting point for anyone with cardiovascular concerns. Both carry the same cautions on dehydration, alcohol and pregnancy.

How often do I need to use a sauna to get the benefit?

In the Finnish data the largest associations were at four to seven sessions a week of at least 19 minutes; two to three sessions a week were intermediate; once a week was the reference group. Whichever sauna you will actually use that often is the one more likely to deliver a benefit.

Does infrared detoxify?

No. Sweat is overwhelmingly water and electrolytes, with trace amounts of other compounds that are not meaningfully different between sauna types. Detoxification is done by the liver and kidneys. The claim is marketing.

What about a sauna blanket?

A blanket produces sweating and warming while lying down with the head outside; it is a lower heat load than either a cabin or a traditional sauna and has not been studied for the outcomes people buy it for. Fine as a comfort purchase, not as a substitute for either sauna.
