The complication is a 2025 meta-analysis that did something most supplement literature doesn't: split the evidence base by who paid for each trial, and found the picture changes substantially once you do.

The most-cited direct evidence for collagen peptides and skin comes from two related 2014 trials by Ehrhardt Proksch and colleagues, published in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology.

Individual trials like Proksch 2014 are exactly the kind of study that gets rolled up into meta-analyses to estimate an overall effect size. When Seung-Kwon Myung and Yunseo Park did this across the full published literature, the initial pooled result looked like more good news for collagen.
This is not the same as saying collagen peptides "don't work" in some absolute sense -- with only 2 of 23 trials independently funded, the independent evidence base is too thin to be conclusive in either direction. What it does mean is that the existing published literature, taken as a whole, is more consistent with funding-related bias driving the reported effect sizes than with a robust, funding-independent biological signal.
What About Joint Health?
Oral collagen peptides are also widely marketed for joint comfort and cartilage support, distinct from the skin-aging claims covered above. That evidence base is separate from the Myung & Park skin meta-analysis and generally smaller, with similar concerns about industry sponsorship common across the sports-nutrition supplement literature more broadly. This guide focuses on the skin-aging evidence specifically, since that's where the most direct funding-bias analysis exists; treat joint-health claims with the same baseline skepticism about sponsorship until an equivalent independently-funded meta-analysis exists for that outcome.

- The safety profile is solid across the trial base regardless of the efficacy debate -- this is a question about benefit size and evidence quality, not risk.
- If you notice a subjective benefit, that's not invalidated by this meta-analysis -- individual response, skin type, baseline collagen status, and diet all vary, and a population-level null finding in underpowered independent trials doesn't rule out individual response.
